Union Falls to Colgate in Regular Season Finale

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey team dropped a 4-3 decision to Colgate University in the regular season finale on Saturday night at the Class of 1965 Arena.

Union (15-16-3, 9-10-3) clinches the sixth seed in the upcoming ECAC Hockey Tournament. Union hosts Brown (8-18-3, 6-14-2), the 11-seed, on Saturday, March 9 at 4:00 p.m. at Messa Rink in the first round of the conference tournament. Season ticket holders can purchase their tickets tomorrow at noon at UnionAthletics.com/tickets. Tickets go on sale for the general public on Tuesday at noon.

Tonight marked the 100th career game for both senior Ben Tupker and junior Caden Villegas.

Villegas recorded a multi-point game with an extra-attacker goal and an assist. Senior Ville Immonen scored his eighth goal of the season with a power-play tally and classmate Chaz Smedsrud scored his team-leading 13th goal of the season.

Colgate opened the scoring 1:17 into the first period. Ryan Sullivan took a shot from the slot to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Union capitalized on their first power-play opportunity of the game. A tic-tac-toe play saw Immonen go backdoor on Carter Gylander to tie the game at one apiece.

The Raiders scored twice in the middle stanza to take a 3-1 lead. Daniel Panetta forced a turnover in Union's end of the ice and sent a shot from the doorstep for the score. Brett Chorske gave Colgate a two-goal lead with a shot from the left circle that took an unlucky bounce off of sophomore Kyle Chauvette's left pad for the score.

Union made it a two-goal game 31 seconds into the third period. Smedsrud backhanded the puck from the doorstep over Gylander's shoulder for the score. Colgate regained a two-goal lead with a goal from Ryan Sullivan. The Garnet Chargers pulled Chauvette in favor of the extra attacker and capitalized with a goal from Villegas. The junior received a pass from classmate Cullen Ferguson at the bottom of the right circle and dodged a defender to backhand the puck from the low slot for his eighth goal of the season.

Chauvette made 25 saves including 10 in the first period. Gylander stopped 22 shots in the win.

Union is home against Brown on Saturday for the first round of the ECAC Hockey Tournament. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
