ORLANDO, Fla. – The Union College women's tennis team had a very successful first day of Spring Break on Friday, defeating Kalamazoo College by an 8-1 score and Ramapo College of New Jersey by a 9-0 score at the USTA National Campus.
Sophomore
Claire Langille led the way for Union (3-2) with a perfect 4-0 day, winning twice on both the singles and doubles courts. Four others – junior
Gabby Gatto, sophomores
Chara Meidani and
Skylar Semon, and first-year
Luisa Arizpe-Sierra – had three victories on the day and all 10 competitors had at least one victory for the Garnet Chargers.
Union started the day with an 8-1 victory over Kalamazoo. The quartet of Meidani, Langille, Semon and senior
Gracie Nicol combined for six of Union's eight wins, with all four players winning in both singles and doubles play.
Nicol and Meidani opened the afternoon with an 8-1 win at first doubles over Juliana Pullen and Maddie Hurley, and Langille and Semon gave Union a 2-1 lead headed into singles play with an 8-4 victory at third doubles over Eleni Bougioukou and Molly Stevison.
Union closed the match by sweeping all six singles matches. Semon made quick work of Stevison at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-1. Meidani and Gatto clinched the match by dropping only four games apiece, with Meidani defeating Hurley, 6-3, 6-1, at second singles, and Gatto defeating Ivy Walker with a pair of 6-2 sets in fourth-singles action. Nicol and Arizpe-Sierra won by identical 7-5, 6-0 scores at first and third singles, respectively, while Langille finished off the win with a 6-3, 6-4 sixth-singles win.
Union came back later in the day to complete its day with a 9-0 sweep of Ramapo. Arizpe-Sierra, Gatto and Langille led the way for the Garnet Chargers with two wins apiece.

Kennedy Alexis got the match started with an 8-1 first-doubles win, followed by an 8-2 victory from Langille and junior
Paige Tromblee at the second flight. Gatto and senior
Kate Hirnak completed the doubles sweep with a hard-fought 8-6 third-doubles win.
The Garnet Chargers then put together a dominant performance in singles play, dropping only four games in six matches. Four of the matches saw Union sweep both sets, as Meidani, Arizpe-Sierra, Gatto and sophomore
Sydney Alphabet all did not lose a game in double-bagel victories. Semon needed only one extra game in a 6-1, 6-0 fourth-singles win and Langille added a 6-2, 6-1 victory at fifth singles.
Union will get back on the court on Sunday with a scrimmage against SUNY New Paltz before returning to action on Monday at 8:30 a.m. against Augustana College.
