ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Union College women's lacrosse team outscored Rochester Institute of Technology by a 4-0 margin and locked the Tigers down defensively in the fourth period to pull away with a 14-8 Liberty League victory on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
First-year
Maddy Schiller led a balanced scoring attack with four goals, one of five multi-goal scorers for Union (4-2, 2-1 Liberty League). Senior
Katie Julien and junior
Greta Maurer both added four points each with two goals and two assists, while first-year
Gillian Joseph recorded three goals and senior
Anna Smith netted a pair as well.

Union led by two (10-8) headed into the final frame, but dominated on both ends of the field to come away with the win. After sophomore
Sydney Widlitz made a save on the opening possession of the period, the Union defense locked down and forced turnovers on RIT's next seven possessions, as the visitors did not get off a shot attempt until three seconds remained in the game. At the other end, Union scored three times in less than two minutes to pull away, thanks to a tally by Julien and two from Schiller. Maurer capped the scoring in the final minute to complete the victory.
Widlitz ended the afternoon with seven saves. First-year
Anna Dembowski paced the defense with three ground balls and three caused turnovers, and senior
Dana Nelson chipped in six draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Maurer opened the scoring 2:52 into the game and Nelson followed 37 seconds later to double the Union lead. The Tigers struck back with two quick tallies to tie the score, and the teams then went nearly eight minutes without a goal before Joseph gave Union back the lead with her first of the day in the final minute.
Union made the first run of the afternoon by scoring three straight tallies in the first 5:29 of the second stanza to build up a 6-2 lead. A pair of Schiller scores started the run, and Julien followed 38 seconds after Schiller's second. After nearly 12 minutes without a goal, RIT netted its first of the period with 3:09 remaining and found the net again less than a minute later to lower the deficit to two at the half.
Joseph netted the first goal of the third quarter after a good defensive stand and then found the back of the net again to boost the Union lead back up to four (8-4) midway through the third. However, the Tigers again came back with two in a row to get back within two at the 10:00 mark of the frame. Smith scored a pair of goals in the final three minutes keep Union up by two headed to the fourth with a 10-8 advantage, setting the team up for a strong finish.
