Union Hangs with #9 Colby in 14-10 Loss in Florida

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Union College women's lacrosse team stayed with #9 Colby College for much of the afternoon before eventually falling by the score of 14-10 in a non-conference matchup at Philip Jones Field.

First-year Maddy Schiller tied for the game-high with four goals to lead Union (4-3), which saw underclassmen score nine of the team's 10 goals. In addition to Schiller's four, first-years Hannah Compa and Gillian Joseph scored two goals each, while sophomore Maddie Doyle and senior Dana Nelson added one each.

Ally Franz scored four goals and added an assist for a game-high five points to lead Colby (6-1), while Julia Jardina scored three times and seven other Mules had one goal apiece.

Colby opened the scoring from the eight-meter arc in the opening minute, but Union settled in and scored twice in 66 seconds to take the lead. Compa knotted the score with 9:52 to go, and Schiller followed soon after to put the Garnet Chargers in front. After the Mules came back with two of their own, Schiller knotted the game at three with the final goal of the opening frame.

The Mules took control in the second stanza, scoring the only four goals to take a 7-3 lead into halftime. Colby outshot Union 10-2 in the period and the Garnet Chargers turned the ball over six times to help Colby increase its advantage.

Union scored three of the first five goals in the third period to get back within three at 9-6 with 7:57 remaining, but Colby rattled off five straight goals – two from Jardina and three from Franz – to build up a 14-6 lead. The Garnet Chargers closed the game strong, however, with Joseph scoring the final goal of the third and Union netting the only three tallies of the fourth frame.

Colby finished with a 37-20 edge in shots and also excelled at the eight-meter arc, converting on 8-of-9 free-position attempts. Sophomore Sydney Widlitz made 10 saves over the first 39:41 of action before senior Hannah Dubinsky made six saves on seven on-target shots over the final 20:19.

Union will be back in action on Saturday when the Garnet Chargers return north to battle #20 Ithaca College in a Liberty League matchup beginning at 4 p.m.
