Seventh Inning Costly in Loss to DePauw

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Union College baseball team dropped a 12-2 decision to DePauw University in seven innings on Monday morning during the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

Junior Kyle Zaslaw went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI while senior Ryan Cowles also recorded a multi-hit game with two hits and an RBI.

DePauw opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. With runners on first and third, a stolen base attempt at second gave the runner at third time to cross home. Union responded in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs. Sophomore Caleb Miller singled followed up by a walk by senior Sebastian Pike to put runners on first and second with one out. An RBI single by Zaslaw brought Miller home and put Pike on third. Cowles followed up with an RBI single of his own to give Union a 2-1 lead.

DePauw took a 4-2 lead in the fifth. A bases-loaded error brought the game-tying run across. A fielder's choice in the next at-bat scored the go-ahead run before an RBI single closed out the scoring in the inning.

DePauw plated eight runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Junior Aidan McGee pitched 4.2 innings in the loss, allowing four runs, none earned, on four hits and one strikeout. Michael Vallone fanned 11 batters in five innings of work for the win.

Union closes out the Florida trip with a game against SUNY Purchase beginning at noon at Lake Myrtle Park #4.
