MEDFORD, Mass. – The #8 Union College men's lacrosse team endured its most lopsided loss in nearly two decades on a rainy Tuesday night at Bello Field, falling to #3/4 Tufts University by a 24-5 score.
Senior
Zach Davis had two goals to lead Union (7-1), while classmate
Jake Mabardy, junior
Matt Dussault and first-year
Mike Wall scored as well for the visitors, who suffered their worst defeat since a 21-2 loss to Middlebury College on April 5, 2004. Jack Regnery paced a relentless Tufts (6-1) attack with six goals and three assists, followed by Charlie Tagliaferri with five tallies.
It was a forgettable evening for the Garnet Chargers on Tuesday night, who scored the first goal of game only to see the Jumbos rattle off the next 16 to put the game away by halftime. Senior
Justin Greene found Mabardy for a score on the opening possession of the game, but the Garnet Chargers failed to get many good looks at goal after that and the Jumbos netted four unanswered tallies to take a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes.
The second quarter was a disastrous one for Union, as the home team scored 11 unanswered goals to take a 15-1 lead into halftime. Tufts outshot the visitors 28-3 in the frame on the way to a commanding advantage.
Davis stopped the run with two goals in 2:35 during the third quarter, but Tufts scored the final five goals of the third and the first two of the fourth. Dussault scored the second goal of his career with 3:44 to go in the fourth off a feed from classmate
Finn Garrity, and Wall netted his first collegiate tally less than a minute later to round out the Union scoring.
Tufts finished the game with a 74-29 edge in total shots. Senior
Dan Donahue made 11 saves while junior
Ward Tucker stopped one shot and first-year
Nick Lynch made four saves in his collegiate debut.
Union will look to shake off the loss this weekend, when the team gets back into Liberty League play with a crucial conference matchup at #5 St. Lawrence University.
