Garnet Chargers Taken Down by #41 Vassar, 7-2

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team had its postseason hopes take a hit with a 7-2 loss to #41 Vassar College in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at the Richard L. Cretella Tennis Center.

With the loss, Union (4-10, 2-4 Liberty League) remains in seventh place in the Liberty League standings with two conference matches remaining. The Garnet Chargers will likely need to win both matches to earn a spot in the postseason.

Vassar (11-4, 5-1 Liberty League) started the day by sweeping the three doubles contests to take an early lead. First-years Keita Fukushima and Solen Bellemare came closest to a win for Union at the second flight before falling to Ethan Mantell and Henry Zhang by an 8-6 score.

Union earned a pair of wins in singles play, but could not overcome the deficit. Fukushima got the Garnet Chargers on the board at third singles, outlasting Fernando Bauermeister by a 6-4, 2-6, (11-9) score to earn his team-leading 10th singles victory of the season. Senior Khai Ton also earned a win at sixth singles, winning a close matchup with Arnav Agostinho, 7-5, 7-6 (7-0).

Union will return home next Saturday, hosting Rochester Institute of Technology for Senior Day beginning at 1 p.m. at the Union Tennis Courts.
