SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker to Rochester Institute of Technology on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at the Union Tennis Courts, falling by the score of 5-4.
Senior
Dimitris Binopoulos had a pair of wins to lead Union (4-11, 2-5 Liberty League) on Senior Day, while first-years
Daniel Saxe and
Solen Bellemare also picked up wins for the home team in the final home match of the season.
RIT (6-9, 2-6 Liberty League) started the day with wins at second and third doubles to take an early lead. Binopoulos and junior
Ben Jacobs prevented a Tiger sweep with an 8-6 win at the top flight, jumping out to a 5-1 lead before holding on to earn Union's first point of the day over Grahith Movva and Luke Weber.
Union took back the lead with a pair of quick singles wins. Saxe evened the score with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Max Chang at fourth singles, and Binopoulos completed his unbeaten day by defeating Alec Turcotte by a 6-4, 6-3 score at second singles. After RIT took a 4-3 lead, Bellemare again got Union back to even at fifth singles with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 victory over Weber.
The final two matches were both incredibly close, but both contests went in favor of the Tigers. Jacobs battled back to force a third set against Movva before coming one break short in a 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-4 defeat, while senior
Khai Ton earned a break to stay alive in the second set before falling in a tiebreaker to Verosh Jayanetti, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Union will close out the 2023-24 season tomorrow with a 9 a.m. match at Skidmore College.
