Women's Tennis Matches Wins Record with Sweep of Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team matched the program single-season wins record for the second straight season by defeating SUNY Oneonta, 9-0, in a non-conference contest at the Dr. Hessian Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon.

With the win, Union (9-6) ties the program standard for wins in a season that was first set in 1982 (9-2) and has been matched five previous times in 1994 (9-3), 1998 (9-2), 2000 (9-3), 2015-16 (9-7) and 2022-23 (9-7).

Ten different players earned at least one win for Union on the afternoon, led by senior Kate Hirnak and sophomore Kennedy Alexis with two victories apiece.

Union started the day by sweeping the three doubles matches. At third doubles, Hirnak and sophomore Sydney Alphabet started off with an 8-3 victory over Sophia Schutte and Illana Ger, breaking the Oneonta pair on four of their five service aces to earn the win. Junior Paige Tromblee and sophomore Claire Langille doubled the Union lead with an 8-2 victory over Danielle Copp and Haley Peck, while Alexis and first-year Luisa Arizpe-Sierra completed the sweep with an 8-4 first-doubles win over Julia Holterman and Brianna Shaw.

Hirnak got singles started with a very quick win at sixth singles, winning 12 straight games to sweep Kelly Hayes by a 6-0, 6-0 score. Junior Gabby Gatto followed suit at the fifth flight, putting up a double-bagel win over Ger, while sophomore Chara Meidani needed only one extra game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles over Shaw.

Sophomore Skylar Semon posted a pair of 6-1 sets to beat Peck at third singles and Alexis completed her undefeated day by defeating Copp, 6-3, 6-1, at the fourth flight. Senior Gracie Nicol finished off the sweep at the top flight, defeating Holtermann by a 6-1, 6-2 score.

Union will look for its 10th win of the season on Friday when the Garnet Chargers head to #35 Skidmore College for a 6 p.m. match.
