MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Union College baseball team extended its winning streak to nine games with a 12-9 win at Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon at Dresser Diamond.
Senior
Thomas Parisi led the way offensively with six hits, three RBI, and a run scored, as Union (22-6) matched the third-longest winning streak in program history and moved to within one game of tying the 2013 and 2016 teams for the longest stretch of wins ever at the school. Five Garnet Chargers recorded an extra-base hit in the win. Sophomore
Caleb Miller extended his hit-streak to 17 games, the longest for a Union player since Eric Egan '16 hit in 17 straight during the 2015 season. Sophomore
Liam McIlroy hit his 10th homerun of the season to tie Colin Kelly '21 for third in Union's single season history.
The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Union quickly tied it up in the bottom of the second. With runners on the corners, Parisi sent an RBI single to center field. Senior
Kobe Mentzer hit an RBI single in the next at bat to knot that game at two.
Union took a 4-2 lead after the top of the third. A bases-loaded fielding error saw the initial go-ahead run score. Parisi hit an RBI single to shortstop one batter later.
Miller hit a solo homerun to left center field for his fifth homerun of the season. The Cardinals responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Union added two runs in the top of the fifth. McIlroy hit his 10th homerun of the season. A pair of singles by Parisi and Mentzer set up Miller, who singled down the left field line to score Parisi from second.
Senior
Ryan Cowles sent a bases-clearing triple into right center in the top of the sixth for two RBIs. Cowles capitalized on a wild pitch to race home to put Union up 10-3. The Cardinals added a run in the sixth, but Union tacked on two more in the seventh. Cowles and Parisi each hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh frame to give Union and eight-run advantage.
The Cardinals made a late push in the final two frames. A two-run homerun in the eighth made it a six-run game. Wesleyan tacked on three more runs in the ninth inning, but Union hung on for the win.
Junior
Aidan McGee started the game and pitched three complete innings with three hits and two runs with a pair of strikeouts. Classmate
Chris Suter earned the win in relief. Sophomore
Jack Klein pitched four innings and game up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
Union is back in action tomorrow with a home contest against Mount St. Mary. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Central Park A Diamond.
