Sobetzko Scorches in Doubleheader at RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Junior Nahnny Sobetzko reached base five times as part of a four-hit day in Union's doubleheader at RIT Saturday, as the Garnet Chargers dropped a pair of tight, one-run contests, 2-1 and 13-12.

Sobetzko registered a 4-for-7 line on the day with three runs batted in, three runs scored, a home run, a double, and a walk. Classmates Tatum Perkins and Riley Callahan followed with three hits, a pair of runs, and a walk each, while first-year Sam Rose reached three times and drove in three.

Game One: RIT 2, Union 1

Union took the game's first lead on the second batter of the game, with Sobetzko blasting the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for her first home run of the season.

Junior Autumn Duff was fantastic limiting RIT's offense. While the Tigers put a runner in scoring position with just one out in each of the first four innings, Duff buckled down each time to strand six runners in the first four frames and maintain Union's lead.

RIT broke through to tie the game, albeit controversial, in the fifth. After a leadoff triple, Duff induced a pop-up that required a lunging catch on the right side of the infield. The runner from third hesitated before breaking from home as Duff fell to the turf, and in addition to the pitcher's throw being too late, Union's appeal to third was unsuccessful as it was ruled the runner tagged up.

Each team stranded a runner in the sixth before RIT walked off the victory in the seventh.

Duff had her strongest outing in the circle of the season, not walking a batter for the first time in 13 appearances while matching season bests with four strikeouts and just one earned run in her 6.2 innings.

Sobetzko was the lone Garnet Chargers with two hits, going 2-for-3 with her solo home run.

Game One: RIT 13, Union 12

Union raced out to a 10-0 lead, putting up three in the first before bringing in seven in the second. Sophomore Haley Gibbons picked up an RBI on a groundout, sandwiched between run-scoring doubles from Perkins and Rose to give the Garnet Chargers an early 3-0 lead.

Sobetzko continued her big day with a two-run double in the second. Perkins brought in another run with a bases-loaded walk three batters later before Rose scored two more with a single into right, and a two-run error later in the inning provided Union a double-digit advantage.

RIT began their climb back in the home half. With the bases loaded, a pair of wild pitches and a single cleared the bags to get the Tigers on the board. An RBI single in the third made it a 10-4 game, and a six-run fourth brought the hosts back even.

Perkins grabbed the lead back for Union in their next at-bats. A high fly ball on the infield fell between a trio of fielders, and Callahan hustled home from second with two outs to make it 11-10.

RIT struck back in the bottom of the fifth however, using a pair of sacrifice flies to take their first lead of the game, before getting an insurance run off a third sac fly in the sixth.

Union put up one last battle in the seventh. Sobetzko led off with a walk to quickly bring the tying run to the plate. She moved up to second on a groundout before coming around to score on Gibbons' double deep into the left-center field gap, but Union stranded the tying run 120 feet away.

Perkins led the offense with her third three-hit game in the last eight days, driving in a pair of runs and also scoring twice, and reaching base a fourth time via a walk. Rose registered the first three RBI game of her career while going 2-for-4 with a walk and a run, while Callahan and Sobetzko each went 2-for-4 with two runs and a walk, with Sobetzko adding a pair of RBIs.

As part of Union's season-high nine walks in the game, Junior Melody Kappel drew a walk of her own, her 22nd of the season, to match Tara Hartnett '23's single-season walks record. Union's 12 runs also matched a season-high for the third time.

Union (6-22) returns home to wrap up their home slate on Tuesday, beginning the final week of the regular season when they take on Russell Sage beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Alexander Field.
