MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Union College baseball team dropped a 12-10 decision to Middlebury College on Monday afternoon at Forbes Field.
Sophomore
Caleb Miller extended his hit streak to 22 consecutive games with two hits, three RBIs, and a run scored. Senior
Thomas Parisi reached his 14
th consecutive game with a hit with two hits and three runs scored. Junior
Kyle Zaslaw, senior
Ryan Cowles, and senior
Sebastian Pike each recorded a multi-hit game.
Parisi singled in his first at-bat of the game and made it to second on a wild pitch. Miller stepped up with two outs and send a two-run blast over the left field fence for his sixth homerun of the season.
The Panthers cut it to one run in the bottom of the third before tying the game with a solo homerun in the fourth inning.
Union countered with three runs in the top of the fifth. McIlroy hit his 11
th homerun of the season to leadoff the fifth inning. Parisi singled one batter later and senior
Kobe Mentzer was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Miller lined an RBI single to center field. Zaslaw hit a sac fly to give Union a 5-2 lead.
Middlebury launched a comeback in the bottom of the frame. A leadoff homerun by Mitchell Schroeder brought the game within two runs. An RBI single later in the frame followed by a three-run home run by Sammy Smith put the Panthers up 7-5.
Union struck back in the top of the sixth with three runs of their own. Union loaded the bases with two outs and Pike drove a double into left field to tie the game at seven each. Zaslaw scored on a passed ball for the go ahead run. The Panthers regained the lead in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run by Schroeder, his second of the game, to give the hosts a 9-8 lead.
Middlebury added two runs in the bottom of the seventh to push the advantage to three runs. The Garnet Chargers loaded the bases in the top of the eight and Cowles singled to right to drive in a run. Junior
Sam Strazza capitalized on a throwing error to cross home for Union's 10
th run to make it a one-run game.
A solo homerun by Lucas Flemming in the bottom of the eighth made it a 12-10 game. Union put runners on base in the ninth, but a double play and a pop up ended the game.
Junior
Aidan McGee started and went four innings with seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits. Junior
Alex Erickson struck out three in two innings of relief. Junior
Cal Place fell to 3-1 on the season with two runs on three hits in one inning. Senior
Bryce Fournier closed out the game with one run and one hit.
Union has a short turnaround as they face Mount St. Mary College on the road tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the MSMC Baseball/Softball Complex.
