Baseball Earns Midweek Win Over VTSU Castleton

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Cal Place earned his first collegiate win for the Union College baseball team in a 7-1 non-conference victory over VTSU Castleton on Tuesday afternoon at Central Park A Diamond.

After battling injuries his first two years, Place earned the start and pitched three scoreless innings. Place struck out three and only allowed four hits. Senior Kyle Patlove, junior Aidan McGee, and senior Bryce Fournier combined for one run, three strikeouts, and one walk in the final six innings to lead the defensive effort for the Garnet Chargers.

Senior Kobe Mentzer led the offensive charge going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Junior Sam Strazza added a pair of extra base hits and sophomore Liam McIlroy registered two hits as well in the afternoon victory.

After two scoreless innings, Strazza drove a double into right field in the third to get on base. Two batters later, McIlroy knocked a triple into center to drive in Union's first run. Senior Thomas Parisi hit an RBI single before stealing second. Mentzer hit an RBI single into left field to help put Union up 3-0 after the third.

Castleton struck back with a leadoff double in the fourth and an RBI single two batters later to make it a two-run game. After the visitors loaded the bases with only one out, the defense turned a double play to get out of the jam.

Union added a run in the bottom of the fifth after Strazza hit a triple into centerfield before capitalizing on a passed ball to regain the three-run lead. The Garnet Chargers added another run in the top of the sixth. Mentzer hit a leadoff double into center and advanced to third after sophomore Andrew Keaveney grounded out. Two batters later, sophomore Caleb Miller extended his hit streak to nine games with an RBI single.

The Garnet Chargers capped the scoring in the seventh inning with two more runs. With runners on second and third, Mentzer sent an RBI single up the middle for his third hit of the day to drive in both runs.

Union returns to action tomorrow with a home game against Williams College. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Central Park A Diamond.
