ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Union College men's soccer team opened the 2024 slate with a 1-0 loss at #25 SUNY Oneonta on Friday evening at Red Dragon Field.
Union was out-shot 13-5, but held a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Both teams generated two shots on goal in a scoreless opening half. Union had an early scoring chance off a corner kick in the first few minutes, but a shot by junior
Grant Della Rocca went too high. First-year
Owen Everett put a shot on net four minutes later, but keeper AJ Lucas made the save to keep the game scoreless. The Red Dragons added a pair of scoring chances, but first-year
Jackson Magee made a pair of stops.
The go-ahead goal came in the 49
th minute of the game. Magee made the initial save, but Kieran Weinstein collected the rebound and scored. Union was awarded five corner kicks in the second half, but the Red Dragons' defense kept the visitors off the board.
Magee made five saves in his college debut in goal for the Garnet Chargers.
Union is back in action on Wednesday for the home opener against SUNY New Paltz at College Park Field beginning at 6:00 p.m.
