Union Shuts Out SUNY New Paltz in Home Opener

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's soccer team opened the home portion of their schedule with a 1-0 win over SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday night at College Park Field.

The win marked the first for head coach Anthony Scaravillo and the first home opener win for the program since September 5, 2021, a 3-0 win over New England College.

First-year Alexander Vittal scored the first goal of his collegiate career off a pass from sophomore Alex Borkland, who registered his first collegiate point in the win. Vittal recorded five of Union's seven shots on goal. First-year Jackson Magee made his second straight start for the Garnet Chargers and recorded his first collegiate win and shutout with three saves.

The Hawks put the pressure on early in the first half with several shots around the Union net, but they all went off target. Vittal put two of his five shots on goal in the opening half.

Union found the back of the net less than seven minutes into the second half. Magee threw the ball up the field to Borkland, who dribbled it up the field where he found Vittal streaking up the right side. A quick shot off Vittal's right foot sent it past keeper Christian Micheli for the score. The Hawks poured on the pressure in the final ten minutes, but Magee made a diving save with under eight minutes to play to keep his shutout bid alive.

Union heads to Ewing, N.J. this weekend for the TCNJ Men's Soccer Classic beginning with a 3:30pm match against Rutgers-Newark on Saturday.
