Greco Provides the Scoring as Field Hockey Downs Oneonta, 3-0

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore Maddie Greco recorded her first career hat trick to account for all the scoring Union College needed in a 3-0 non-conference field hockey victory on Wednesday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

After scoring three goals in the first four games of the year, Greco was all over the field for Union (4-1) on Wednesday, as she scored three goals and could have had several more if not for excellent stops by Oneonta goalie Maura Leib. Her seven shots nearly equaled the total taken by the Red Dragons, with the home team boasting a 20-8 edge in shots.

At the other end of the field, junior Sophie Brady made five saves to earn her first shutout of the season and extend her personal shutout streak to 183:56, dating back to the season-opener against VTSU Castleton. As a team, Union has posted three straight clean sheets and has gone 213:27 since giving up its last goal.

Union started the game strong, scoring on their first offensive opportunity of the evening. Just over two minutes into the contest, the home team earned its first penalty corner and immediately converted, as Greco inserted to the top of the arc for junior Megan Dorsey, whose shot-pass found Greco alone at the near post for a redirection.

With eight minutes left in the opening period, a shot by Greco got by Leib and hit the off the foot of Abigail Draper to prevent a goal. Leib then denied Dorsey on the subsequent penalty stroke to keep it a one-goal game.

Greco struck again midway through the second stanza with her second of the game. Dorsey made a nice move down the far endline and crossed the ball toward the goalmouth, where Greco redirected the ball past a defender to herself at the far post where she tapped it home.

Union did an excellent job of hemming Oneonta into their defensive end in the opening 30 minutes, applying continuous offensive pressure to the tune of an 18-0 edge in shots and an 8-2 edge in penalty corners.

After a scoreless third quarter that saw Brady made her first save of the game, Greco completed her hat trick with 7:57 remaining in the fourth frame. Sophomore Rachel Ostiguy made a nice run down the near side and crossed the ball into the center of the arc for the put away.

Brady made four saves down the stretch to preserve the shutout and her fourth victory of the season.

After a weekend off from competition, Union will continue non-conference play next Wednesday at Hamilton College beginning at 6 p.m.
