CLINTON, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team hung tough with #24 Hamilton College on Wednesday evening, but the host Continentals scored the go-ahead tally with under nine minutes remaining in the fourth period to escape with a 2-1 victory over the Garnet Chargers at Goodfriend Field.
Sophomore
Maddie Greco found the net for Union (4-2), extending her personal goal scoring streak to four games and giving her at least one tally in five of Union's six games so far this season.
The Union defense did a solid job keeping shots away from the net of junior
Sophie Brady for much of the first half, as only two of the Continentals' first eight attempts were on target and Brady denied both. However, the home team broke through with 2:43 remaining in the second period on a goal by Delaney Grace, snapping Brady's personal shutout streak at 211:51 and the team's shutout streak at 240:43.
Union had a flurry of opportunities immediately after the Hamilton goal, earning three penalty corners and taking three shots at goal, but the team still went into the half down by a goal. Hamilton held a 9-7 edge in shots over the first 30 minutes.
The visitors carried that momentum into the second half and needed just 83 seconds to even the score, as Greco took a pass from senior
Shaelyn Kelley and netted her seventh goal of the year. Both teams had three shots the period as the game went into the fourth knotted at one.
Hamilton took the only three shots of the final frame and converted on their fourth and final penalty corner at 6:12 of the period on a Lydon Kelley goal to take the lead back for good. Union pulled Brady for an extra attacker with under three minutes remaining but could not get any pressure on the Continental net.
Hamilton finished the evening with a 16-10 edge in shots but Union doubled up the Continentals in penalty corners, 8-4. Brady made six saves to keep her team in the game, while Kelly Janssen and Abby Griffin combined to make five stops.
Union will remain on the road this weekend, taking on Ramapo College of New Jersey on Saturday at 1 p.m.
