SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team finished off the dual match portion of its fall slate with a 6-1 victory over Farmingdale State College on Saturday afternoon at the Union Tennis Courts.
Nine different players recorded at least one win on the afternoon, led by sophomore
Solen Bellemare and first-year
Jesus Sosa with a pair of wins each.
Union (2-0) swept the three doubles contests to earn the first point of the day. Senior
Ben Jacobs and Sosa started off with a 6-1 win at first doubles over Vansh Aggarwal and Ryan Hendel, followed by Bellemare and sophomore
Daniel Saxe clinching the point with a 6-2 third-doubles win over Emil Dabovic and Ahmed Zakaria.
Seniors
Austin Gregory and
Seth Prusko finished off the doubles sweep by beating Kwaku Agyeman and Ty Williams in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-2), at the second flight. The pair saved a match point at deuce down 4-5 and then saved three more match points down 0-40 on their opponents' serve before coming back to force a tiebreaker, in which they scored the final five points to pick up the victory.
Moving to singles play, Union earned the first five points to clinch the victory. Sosa completed his unbeaten day with a pair of 6-1 sets over Hendel at the third flight, followed soon after by Bellemare's second win of the day, a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Michael Lerman at sixth singles. First-years
Arhan Gupta and
Vivaan Gupta secured the win with victories at fourth and fifth singles, with Arhan besting Williams, 6-1, 6-3, and Vivaan defeating Agyeman by a 6-4, 6-1 score.
Senior
Ian Schunk earned the team's sixth point at the top flight with a pair of 6-3 sets over Ahmed. Jacobs came a supertiebreaker short of a Union sweep at second singles, dropping a 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), (10-8) decision to Aggarwal.
Union will finish off its fall schedule next weekend, taking part in the ITA Northeast Regionals at Drew University and the Crosstown Cup at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
