Box Score 2 MADISON, N.J. – The Union College men's tennis team finished off its fall slate with a busy Friday at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships and the Crosstown Cup.
Three members of the team went south to Drew University for day one of the ITA Northeast Regionals, with the Garnet Chargers represented by three singles and one doubles entry.
Senior
Ben Jacobs came a supertiebreaker short of defeating The College of New Jersey's Harrison Maitland-Carter in the first round, coming back to take the second set 7-5 after dropping the first 6-4, before losing 10-3 in the breaker. Also in the top half of the bracket, senior
Ian Schunk fell in the first round to Jingyuan Chen of New York University by a 6-2, 6-2 score. In the bottom half of the bracket, first-year
Jesus Sosa dropped a 6-4, 6-0 match to Connor Griff of Hamilton College.
Jacobs and Sosa also competed in doubles play for Union, falling to Troy Steiner and Jacob Linares of Hobart College by an 8-6 score. The pair saved a match point at 5-7 to stay alive, but could not complete the comeback.
The remainder of the team traveled across the river to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to battle with the Engineers at RPI's Sharp Courts.
In doubles play, sophomores
Solen Bellemare and
Daniel Saxe picked up an 8-7 (7-5) win over Jonathan McMillan and Boris Slesarev, while sophomore
Shreyas Kode and first-year
Arhan Gupta came a tiebreaker short against Debarshi Sen and Caden Marston, 8-7 (7-2).
Gupta got his win in singles play, taking down Sid Srinivasan by an 8-5 score. He was joined in the win column by first-year
David Wang, who defeated Slesarev in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-5).
Union will take some time off from competition before returning to action in February 2025 with a full slate of conference and non-conference dual matches.
