SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Eight different players found the net as the Union College men's soccer team exploded for a season-high nine goals in a 9-0 romp over the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences on Wednesday night at College Park Field.
Eleven different players recorded at least one point on the night for Union (3-4-2), led by first-year
Gio Capellino with the first two goals of his collegiate career. Classmates
Nate Langlois and
Logan Weitzmann as well as junior
Brian Breslow netted their first career tallies as well in the victory, while first-year
Julian Badger picked up his first collegiate points with a pair of assists.
First-year
Alexander Vittal got the scoring started in the fourth minute, taking a pass from senior
Wyatt Goldfisher and finding the net for the team-best third time so far this season. Senior
Evan Perry doubled the lead at the 10:27 mark, as a shot off the crossbar by Goldfisher caromed back out to Vittal, whose header found Perry alone at the back post for the put away.
After several near misses, Goldfisher got his goal in the 20th minute, as he collected the rebound of a shot off the woodwork by sophomore
Alex Borkland and deposited it into the net for his first goal of the year. The home team added two more later in the frame, with first-year
Owen Everett scoring from the penalty spot in the 24th minute and Langlois getting past multiple defenders to score his first career goal 6:25 before halftime.
Union had almost three-quarters of the possession in the opening half and boasted a 26-2 edge in shots, as the Garnet Chargers rarely let the ball past midfield in a near-continuous exercise of offensive pressure.
Union outshot Albany Pharmacy 20-1 over the final 45 minutes, although it took over half an hour for the pressure to result in any goals. Weitzmann started off the late-game avalanche in the 73rd minute with his first collegiate goal, one-touching the carom of a Badger effort into the left-side netting. Breslow added his first goal with some flair in the 79th minute, cutting through two defenders before finding the far-side netting.
Cappelino put an entertaining end to the scoring with a pair of nice goals, finding the top corner with his right foot in the 84th minute and then carving through no fewer than three defenders before depositing his second of the night with 2:45 remaining.
The Garnet Chargers finished the evening with a 46-3 edge in shots. Junior
Jacob Perry made one save in the opening half to earn the win, while sophomore
Nate Bott made one save in 22 scoreless minutes and first-year
Dmitri Wild-Arons played the final 23 minutes without facing a shot.
Union will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday, when the team starts Liberty League play at Vassar College beginning at 2 p.m. in Poughkeepsie.
