POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Union College men's soccer team fell to Vassar College by a 1-0 score in the team's Liberty League opener on Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field.
Vassar (6-2-0, 1-0-0 Liberty League) had the better of play over the first 45 minutes, taking 11 shots toward the net of first-year
Jackson Magee while the Garnet Chargers had just two attempts at the Vassar net. Despite the shot disparity, Magee stopped both on-target attempts and the two teams went into halftime scoreless.
The only goal of the afternoon came off the foot of Joshua Lee in the 54th minute, taking a pass from Eli Torrey and beating Magee. Union (3-5-2, 0-1-0 Liberty League) increased the offensive pressure after the goal, taking five shots, but Jacob Raphan turned aside a pair of shots in the final 11 minutes to preserve the shutout.
Both teams took eight shots in the second half, giving Vassar a 19-10 edge in shots for the day. Magee and Raphan both made three saves on the afternoon.
Union will step out of conference to travel to Elmira College for a 4 p.m. match on Tuesday.
