Jorgensen Equalizes Late to Run Unbeaten Streak to Seven

CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College women's soccer team saw its shutout streak snapped at three matches but a late goal by junior Vanessa Jorgensen salvaged a 1-1 tie for the Garnet Chargers against St. Lawrence University in both teams' Liberty League opener on Wednesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

Union (4-1-3, 0-0-1 Liberty League) extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with the tie, matching the 2022 squad for the longest stretch without a loss since 2016 (6-0-4).

St. Lawrence (4-2-1, 0-0-1 Liberty League) took control of the match early, scoring in the sixth minute to grab the early lead. Off a short corner, Grace Mochnal got past a defender and dribbled along the far endline before finding Meredith Donahue at the near post for a header. The goal snapped Union's scoreless streak at 339:43 dating back to September 11 against Western New England University.

The Garnet Chargers settled in defensively after a busy opening 13 minutes and kept SLU without a shot for the remainder of the half. Meanwhile, the team put five shots toward the Saints' net – including an effort by sophomore Ashley Sheldon from 35 yards out that rang off the crossbar in the 41st minute – but could not get the equalizer in the opening half.

Both teams had chances in the early portion of the second half, with sophomore Maya Koster and SLU's Darcie McDonough both making two saves to keep the score at 1-0.

Union finally broke through in the 79th minute to even the score. Sophomore Delaney McNinch played a great ball into the left corner for senior Grace Penna, who served a ball into the box for Jorgensen, who used the left foot to rifle a shot past McDonough with 11:42 left on the clock.

Koster made two more saves down the stretch to preserve the tie for the Garnet Chargers. She played the full 90 minutes in goal for Union, making seven saves, while McDonough made four stops for the Saints. St. Lawrence finished the day with a 15-10 edge in shots and took the only two corner kicks of the afternoon.

Union will continue Liberty League play on Saturday with a 2 p.m. kickoff against Vassar College at College Park Field.
