Men's Hockey Drops 5-3 Decision at #19 Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Tied at three each going into the third period, the Union College men's hockey team dropped a 5-3 decision to #19 Clarkson University on Friday night at Cheel Arena.

"I thought we mismanaged the puck a little," said head coach Josh Hauge. "We had some opportunities we didn't finish and they made the most of theirs."

Junior John Prokop led the way with his fifth multi-point game of the season. First-years Ben Muthersbaugh and Riley Brueck scored a goal each while senior Josh Nixon tallied his third goal in two games.

The Garnet Chargers won the faceoff battle with a 33-28 edge. Juniors Colby MacArthur and Nate Hanley led the way with 10 wins each.

"This group will continue to do what they do," added Hauge. "They will work hard and get back to it tomorrow."

Union opened the scoring early with a goal from Muthersbaugh. Prokop sent a pass from the point up the boards to classmate Brandon Buhr in the corner. Buhr found Muthersbaugh in the center of the left-wing circle and the first-year sent the one-timer past Ethan Langenegger for his ninth goal of the season. The Golden Knights tied it up at 18:39 of the first period with a goal from Talon Sigurdson. Brueck gave Union the lead with 41.4 seconds to play in the first. Senior Cullen Ferguson fired a shot from the point and Brueck redirected the puck into the net.

The Garnet Chargers extended the lead 1:34 into the second period. MacArthur chipped the puck up the boards to Prokop at the left point. The blueliner sent a one-timer towards the net and Nixon was there to redirect the puck into the net. Clarkson tied it up 2:25 later with Aryton Martino's first of the night, which started a string of four unanswered goals for the Golden Knights. After a turnover at the blueline, Ryan Richardson tied the game at 9:11 of the second period.

Union controlled the early part of the third period with four straight shots on goal before going on the powerplay. The Golden Knights added more pressure on Union before a holding penalty sent MacArthur to the box. Clarkson only needed 23 seconds on the player advantage to take the lead with a goal from Jared Mangan. Martino struck again at 17:22 for this second goal of the night to put the game away.

Junior Kyle Chauvette stopped double-digit shots in all three periods with 32 saves in the contest. Langenegger made 17 saves in the win.

Union heads down route 11 tomorrow to continue the weekend trip in the North Country with a game at St. Lawrence. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Appleton Arena.
