SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Union College women's indoor track & field team saw nine competitors record new season-bests as the Garnet Chargers took sixth place at the Springfield College Massasoit Classic, held on Saturday at the Springfield Field House.
The Garnet Chargers did not bring the full squad to Springfield on Saturday, but still finished with 28 points to place sixth. Host Springfield (243.5 points) earned the top spot on the day, well clear of runner-up Wellesley College (119 points).
Sophomore
Ashley Sheldon highlighted the day for Union by taking top honors in the high jump, clearing a season-best 1.61 meters on her first attempt. After clearing 1.51 meters on her second attempt, she needed all three attempts at 1.56 meters before taking the winning height on the first try.
Sheldon also made the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.02 that placed her fourth in the prelims, and she took fourth again in the finals with an improved time of 9.95 seconds.
Senior
Gabby Baker was the team's top finisher in the prelims of the 60-meter dash, posting the best time of her career by crossing the line in 8.31 seconds to take seventh. She then improved on that time in the finals, moving two spots up into fifth place after racing to an 8.28-second finish.
Union earned nine points in the mile run, with first-year
Isla Langsdorf (5:52.71) and sophomore
Emilie Rosecan (a career-best 5:54.11) finishing in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Senior
Lauren Armstrong was the team's top finisher in the shot put, posting a top distance of 9.25 meters to place 13th. Sophomore
Epephanie LaBoy led the squad in the weight throw with a career-best toss of 10.89 meters, just missing a spot in the top-eight with a ninth-place finish.
Union will be back in Massachusetts next weekend, taking part in the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University on Friday.
