Women's Hockey Breaks Single Season Win Record in Victory Over Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Union College women's hockey team scored two early goals and held on over the final 45 minutes as the Garnet Chargers broke the program single-season wins record with their 12th win of their season, completing the sweep of Brown in a 2-1 victory on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.

The four straight victories are tied for the longest winning streak in program history. The win moves Union (12-16-1) past Brown (11-10-3) into eighth place in the conference standings, and look to edge Yale tomorrow, who sit just 0.5 points ahead.

Junior Amanda Quan opened the scoring for the second time this season against Brown, while senior Paige Greco added a goal, extending her point streak to four games the first time in her career. Seniors Maya Jones and Maren Friday and junior Stephanie Bourque were credited with assists.

Quan scored just 6:20 into the first period. After Jones poked the puck out of Brown's possession at the top of the slot, Quan picked up the puck and rifled it top shelf.

A Union power play five minutes later set up Greco to net her sixth goal of the season. Greco picked up the loose puck off of her original blocked shot and fired the puck into the top left corner of the net.

Union finished the next nine minutes of play with two shots on goal to Brown's four shots but neither team capitalized.

In the middle frame, Brown split the lead in half five minutes into the period. Avery Saba fired a shot from inside the right circle into the net.

For the remaining fifteen minutes in the period, Brown held a slight edge winning seven face offs to Union's six while Union held a five to two advantage in shots but neither team capitalized.

In the final frame, Union played a strong defensive effort blocking eight shots while senior Sophie Matsoukas made eight critical saves. Brown pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with just over three minutes to go in regulation, but the Garnet Chargers shut the Bears down to secure the win. Matsoukas finished the game with 13 saves.

Union returns to ECAC conference play tomorrow as they take on Yale University in New Haven. Puck drop is set for 3:00 pm at Ingalls Rink.
