Women's Hockey Falls 3-2 to Yale Despite Late Period Effort

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Despite a late third period effort and goal, Union fell 3-2 to Yale University Saturday afternoon at Ingalls Rink in New Haven.

The loss dropped Union (12-17-1) back to ninth place in conference standings, while Brown (12-10-3) regained eighth place after defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (12-15-1) on Saturday afternoon.

First-year Karianne Engelbert and junior Mallory Mauracher netted goals for the Garnet Chargers. Seniors Paige Greco and Maddie Suitor and juniors Stephanie Bourque and Greta Kropp were credited with assists.

Yale quickly got one on the board just over three minutes into the first period. Emma Harvey sent a cross ice pass to Anna Bargman and Bargman put the puck in the net on the back door.

Yale continued to dominate the next seven minutes recording five shots on net and capitalized on their second goal of the evening. Naomi Boucher skated in and picked up a loose puck at the top of the slot and rifled it into the top shelf of the net.

In the second period, a penalty on Yale just over four minutes in allowed Union to capitalize on their first goal of the game. After receiving a pass from Bourque, Greco fired a shot into net front traffic and Engelbert deflected the puck into the net.

Union carried offensive momentum for the final 15 minutes of the period recording 10 shots on net. Defensively, the Garnet Chargers successfully killed off two penalties and blocked five shots. Senior goaltender Sophie Matsoukas made 16 saves to keep Yale from adding goals in the second period.

Union and Yale began the third period with four on four action after a penalty was assessed to Union for holding the stick and to Yale for roughing at the end of the second period. Yale capitalized with 12 seconds remaining on four on four when Carina D'Antonio was able to get the puck from the boards to Stephanie Stantion who fired a shot home from the bottom of the right circle.

However, Union kept pressing, and just over seven minutes later, the Garnet Chargers put one home. Kropp was able to get a tricking puck past Yale's goaltender across the crease to Mauracher who tucked the loose puck into the left corner of the net.

Union pulled Matsoukas with a little less than two minutes remaining in regulation for an extra attacker, and fired two shots on goal but were unsuccessful in tying the game. Matsoukas finished the game with 37 saves.

The Garnet Chargers return to ECAC conference action at home next weekend at Messa Rink as they face #4 Colgate and #5 Cornell. Puck drop is set for 6:00 pm against the Raiders and 3:00 pm against the Big Red.
