Thomas and Surber Power Union Past Bard in Shutout Victory

SCHENECTADY, NY. - Seniors Anabelle Thomas and Sophia Surber provided the offense as the Union College Women's Soccer team powered past Bard College with a 2-0 shutout victory on Wednesday night at College Park Field.

Union controlled much of the first-half play, outshooting Bard 7-1. In the 18th minute, senior Vanessa Jorgensen nearly opened the scoring with a strike that Bard goalkeeper McKenna Reeves got a hand on before it deflected off the crossbar and out. Reeves made four saves in the half to keep the game scoreless.

Union broke the deadlock in the 51st minute in the second half when Thomas headed in a corner from Jorgensen inside the six-yard box.

Thomas nearly doubled her tally in the 63rd minute, but her effort was cleared off the line by Bard's defense.

Four minutes later, Surber extended the lead with a 20-yard strike that dipped just under the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Union finished the night with a 16-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Junior Maya Koster, senior Rachel Berliner, and sophomore Brooke Rosenshine combined for the shutout in net. Koster started and recorded one save in the first half, Berliner added nearly 38 minutes of scoreless play, and Rosenshine closed out the final seven minutes to secure the clean sheet.

The Garnet Chargers continue Liberty League action on Saturday, hosting Rensselaer at College Park Field for a 2:00 pm kickoff.
