SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – First-years
Matt Guiliano and
Gavin Blake powered the offense, while senior goalkeeper
Jacob Perry made nine saves to backstop the Union College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Ithaca Bombers on Saturday afternoon at College Park Field.
With the win, Union (5-5-4) sits tied for fifth place in the Liberty League standings alongside St. Lawrence (5-8-0). The Garnet Chargers hold a 2-1-3 conference record, while the Saints stand at 3-4.
In the opening 15 minutes, Ithaca generated four early shots, including one that narrowly missed the target.
Union capitalized in the 21st minute when a through pass from
Justin Ely found Guiliano, who buried the ball into the top-right corner over Ithaca's goalkeeper to give Union a 1-0 lead.
The Bombers responded 16 minutes later when a goal kick deflected off Ithaca's Ikey Borden's head and landed at the feet of Trevor Barrett, who dribbled into space and tucked it past Perry to tie the game.
Union quickly regained the lead six minutes later. Sophomore
Eamonn Kelley sent a pass up the middle, and Blake muscled his way through an Ithaca defender to win the ball and finish for the 2-1 advantage.
In the second half, both teams recorded four shots on target in the first 20 minutes. With just four minutes remaining in regulation, Ithaca produced a dangerous chance on goal, but Perry made a diving save to preserve the 2-1 victory for Union.
Union continues Liberty League play Wednesday traveling to Bard for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
