CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team missed a golden opportunity to stay atop the Liberty League standings on Sunday afternoon, as the Garnet Chargers conceded the final two goals of the game to suffer a 2-1 loss to St. Lawrence University at North Country Field.
The loss was one of several surprising results in conference play on Sunday, which allowed Union (9-6, 4-1 Liberty League) to stay in second place in the standings, a half-game behind University of Rochester (4-1) and a half-game ahead of Vassar College and William Smith College (3-2).
Union got on the board first with 3:56 gone by in the opening period when junior
Maddie Greco corralled the rebound of a shot by senior
Megan Dorsey and fired home her 15th tally of the season. That was the only goal of the opening 30 minutes, which saw Union outshoot SLU by a 9-3 margin and take 10 corners to the Saints' two. Senior
Sophie Brady made two stops in the opening half for the visitors.
St. Lawrence (3-8, 0-5 Liberty League) evened the score in the first minute of the third period, with Sydney LeClair converting off a penalty corner 53 seconds after halftime. The Saints took their first lead of the game with 2:36 remaining in the third on a goal by Caroline Hamilton and took that one-goal edge into the fourth. Union took the final six shots of the game and earned four penalty corners over the final 3:40 of the contest, but the visitors were unable to find the equalizer.
Union doubled up St. Lawrence in shots by an 18-9 margin and earned 16 corners to the home team's five. Brady made four saves and allowed both goals for Union, while Elizabeth Walsh stopped 10 shots to earn the win for SLU.
The Garnet Chargers will return to non-conference play on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. match against Montclair State University at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
