Harchetts Becomes Program Wins Leader with 2-1 Victory over MSU

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Rachel Ostiguy scored the game-winning goal in the 37th minute to give head coach Kelly Harchetts her program-record 105th career victory as the Garnet Chargers defeated Montclair State University by a 2-1 score on Wednesday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

In her 14th season at the helm of the program, Harchetts surpassed Charlie Robert (1983-95) for the most wins in program history with her 105th win. Forty-six of those victories have come in the last four seasons, moving just one win away from matching the most successful four-year stretch in the program's 50-year history.

Ostiguy and senior Megan Dorsey had the goals on the afternoon for Union (10-7), which reached the 10-win plateau for the fourth straight season. With her goal Dorsey moved into a tie for seventh place with Buthaina Shukri '81 on the school's career points list (71).

The Garnet Chargers had control for a majority of the opening period, holding an 8-1 edge in shots. The home team cracked the scoreboard on its sixth shot of the afternoon, when Dorsey took a penalty corner insert from sophomore Maggie Monaghan and fired a rocket past goalie Sydney White for her fifth goal of the year with 2:18 on the clock.

Montclair State (4-10) evened the score with its only shot of the second stanza, when Sadie Eichlin received a corner insert and sent a looping shot over a crowd in front and into the net.

Union took only two shots in the third period, but the team needed no more to take back the lead. With 6:02 gone by in the frame, Greco sent a pass into the middle of the crease area where Ostiguy battled for the ball and slipped it home to put Union up 2-1 with her sixth goal of the season. The home team outshot Montclair State 8-0 in the fourth frame to finish off the victory.

Over the 60 minutes, the Garnet Chargers outshot the Red Hawks by a 21-4 margin, with White making 13 saves - including a penalty stroke stop in the fourth period - to keep her team in the game. Senior Sophie Brady allowed one goal over the first two periods, while sophomore Tess Parker stopped the only shot she faced in the second half to pick up the win.

Union will finish off its Liberty League slate on Saturday with a noon matchup at #25 University of Rochester, as the team looks to sure up its postseason positioning.
