ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Junior
Amy Vytopilova tipped home a shot by sophomore
Rowan Dapson 6:58 into overtime to give the Union College field hockey team a huge 2-1 (OT) victory over NFHCA #25 University of Rochester in the team's Liberty League regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon at Fauver Stadium.
With the victory, Union (11-7, 5-2 Liberty League) has clinched at least a share of the Liberty League regular-season title for the second straight season, with Rochester (13-5, 4-2 Liberty League) and Vassar College both sitting a half-game back of the Garnet Chargers with one game remaining on their schedules. Seeding for the postseason will be determined after Wednesday's final two conference games.
Vytopilova and Dapson provided the offense on the day for the Garnet Chargers and combined to produce the game-winner on Union's 12th penalty corner of the day. Dapson took the insert at the top of the arc and got past a defender, and her shot was deftly deflected home by Vytopilova to set off a celebration.
The goal gave Union its 11th victory of the season, marking the first time in program annals that the team has won at least 11 games in four consecutive seasons. The team's 47 wins over the last four years are also tied for the most over a four-year stretch in the program's 50-year history.
The Garnet Chargers dominated in every area except the scoreboard over the first 30 minutes, outshooting Rochester by a 6-1 margin and holding a similar edge in penalty corner opportunities. However, the only goal of the first two frames came off the stick of UR's Sophia Marcotte 4:40 into the contest and the Yellow Jackets took that one-goal lead into the half.
The visitors managed only one shot in the third period, but it was all Union needed to tie the score, as Dapson blasted a shot from seven-yards out to beat Kara Houston and knot the score. One save by senior
Sophie Brady and a huge defensive save by junior
Amelia Stevens late in the frame allowed the game to stay tied headed to the fourth.
Union dominated play in the fourth period and into overtime, combining for a 15-3 shot edge over the final 21:58 of the game. After a 7-1 shot edge in the fourth could not produce a game-winner, Union fired off eight shots in six-plus minutes to finally break through on Vytopilova's game-ending deflection.
Union finished the game with a 22-7 edge in shots and took 12 penalty corners to Rochester's four. Brady made one save over the first three quarters, while sophomore
Tess Parker came on for the fourth period and overtime to earn the win. Houston made 10 saves to keep UR in the game.
Union will close out the regular season on Wednesday with a non-conference matchup against Colby-Sawyer College beginning at 6 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
