SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior captain
Stephanie Bourque became the all-time points and assists leader among defensemen, assisting on sophomore
Klara Kenttälä's power-play goal in the Union College women's hockey team's 5-2 loss to #10 Clarkson University on Friday evening at M&T Bank Center.
Junior
Mikayla Blomquist opened the scoring for the Garnet Chargers, with assists from senior
Greta Kropp and junior
Quinn Dunkle. Kenttälä netted her first goal of the season on the power play, with Bourque and junior
Maddie Leaney earning assists.
Union earned an early power play 2:41 into the opening frame but could not convert. Clarkson struck first at 5:25 on a three-on-two rush, as Lara Beecher fed Sara Manness, who found Sena Catterall for the finish.
Seven minutes later, Union evened the score when Dunkle moved the puck up to Kropp, who connected with Blomquist. Blomquist carried the puck up the left side on a two-on-one rush with senior
Amanda Quan and buried her shot to make it 1-1.
A Clarkson penalty two minutes later gave Union another chance, and the Garnet Chargers capitalized. Bourque fired the puck across to Leaney, whose shot rebounded to Kenttälä for the go-ahead goal and Bourque's record-breaking point.
However, a Union penalty just 16 seconds later gave Clarkson a power play, and Andrea Trynkova scored off a rebound from Sara Manness to tie the game at 2-2.
The teams skated four-on-four late in the period, but neither side converted.
Union earned another power play six minutes into the second period but again came up empty. At 12:29, Clarkson reclaimed the lead when Rhea Hicks tipped a shot home from Megan McKay to make it 3-2.
In the third period, Union spent much of the frame shorthanded. Clarkson took advantage with two more power-play goals. Kiera Hurry scored through traffic at 13:28, and Catterall added her second of the night at 18:08 off a crisp passing play from Katie and Sara Manness to seal the 5-2 win.
Junior goaltender
Monja Wagner made 33 saves in the loss.
Union returns to action tomorrow, wrapping up their stretch of 10 straight home games with a 3:00 p.m. matchup against #15 St. Lawrence University at M&T Bank Center.
