Missed Opportunities Haunt Field Hockey in Loss to Vassar

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team held large edges in possession and offensive chances, but the Garnet Chargers could not convert those advantages into a victory as Union fell to Vassar College by a 2-1 score in Liberty League action on a Senior Day Sunday at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Union (6-6, 1-1 Liberty League) dominated play for the first 30 minutes, earning 12 penalty corners – including eight in the first period alone – and putting six shots on goal to the visitors' two. Despite that advantage, however, Vassar (7-4, 2-0 Liberty League) found the net on its first shot of the game, as Zoe Robinson netted her ninth of the year to put the Brewers in front.

The play was more even in the second half, with both teams putting three shots on goal and several offensive opportunities generated at both ends of the field. Vassar put Union into a deeper hole thanks to a Sofia Beseth tally 6:53 into the third period and the score remained 2-0 leaded to the fourth.

Union finally got some energy early in the final frame, when junior Rachel Ostiguy fired home her third goal of the season just 64 seconds into the period. The Garnet Chargers gained some momentum from the tally, but Vassar turned up the pressure in the midfield and Union did not manage another shot until a Ostiguy chance in the final minute that was stopped.

Senior Sophie Brady made two stops over the first 45 minutes for Union, while sophomore Tess Parker made one save in the fourth period before coming out for an extra attacker in the final three minutes. Vassar goalie Grace Wiley made eight saves to earn the win for the visitors.

Union will return to action on Wednesday, when the team plays its rescheduled game with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute beginning at 4 p.m. in Troy.
