TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Rowan Dapson scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining to give junior
Maddie Greco her program-record-tying 100th career point and the Union College field hockey team a much-needed 3-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Liberty League action on Wednesday afternoon at Harkness Field.
Junior
Amy Vytopilova and sophomore
Maggie Monaghan joined Dapson in the scoring column for Union (7-6, 2-1 Liberty League), while Greco, junior
Molly Halliday and first-year
Ellie Innes registered assists. With her fourth assist and 28th point of the season, Greco joins Jessica Trotter '07 (46-8-100) as the only players in Union field hockey history to reach the century mark for a career, with both doing so in only three seasons.
Union got on the board first 6:22 into the contest after an RPI turnover, when Halliday sent a sideline insert past two RPI defenders to Vytopilova, who tallied her fifth goal of the season. The visitors posted a decisive 6-0 edge in shots over the opening 15 minutes.
The tide turned the other direction in the second stanza, with Rensselaer (6-4, 0-2 Liberty League) posting a 9-2 edge in shots. The Engineers evened the score on their first on-target attempt of the afternoon, coming in the 22nd minute via the stick of Sophia Brown, and the home team kept the ball in the offensive end for much of the period. Despite that, however, Union went into halftime with a lead when Innes found Monaghan with 1:13 remaining for third goal of the year to put the visitors back in front.
The third stanza was played mostly in the midfield and featured only two combined shots, but RPI still managed to even the score again with 1:25 remaining on a Katie Galgay tally.
Union reasserted itself to start the fourth period, taking five shots to RPI's one over the first 10 minutes. The persistence paid off with 4:36 remaining, when Dapson took a penalty corner insert from Greco on the near side and fired her first goal of the season into the back of the net. The Garnet Chargers held on from there to pick up the win, dodging a late bullet when the Engineers missed a great chance in front of the Union net.
The teams finished the afternoon with 14 shots apiece. Senior
Sophie Brady made four saves to pick up her 32nd career win, while Tess Garchinsky made five saves for RPI.
Union will return home for its next two conference games, beginning with a Homecoming and Family Weekend matchup against William Smith at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
