Garnet Chargers Earn Two Weekly Awards, Three Honor Roll Spots

TROY, N.Y. –  Two Union College student-athletes received weekly honors from the Liberty League and three more were recognized with honor roll selections for the week ending on November 9, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.

Men's Basketball Performer of the Week: Jack Plesser
Plesser was named the Most Valuable Player of the Max Ziel Tournament, leading Union to a pair of wins by averaging 20.0 points on 60.7 percent shooting and 8.5 rebounds. The junior scored 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting with 10 rebounds and three assists in a first-round win over SUNY Poly, then added 17 points and seven boards in a title-game win over SUNY Oswego.

Football Defensive Performer of the Week: Matt Mitchell
Mitchell tied for the team lead with seven tackles (six solo) and had a game-saving interception in the end zone as Rochester was marching for a go-ahead touchdown in the final two minutes of Union's 14-10 win over the Yellow Jackets on Saturday. The senior also broke up two passes in the victory, which clinched at least a share of the Liberty League title.

Honor Roll Mentions:

Women's Basketball: Jelena Perovic
Perovic scored a team-leading 16 points on 8-of-17 shooting and added 10 rebounds, two assists and a block in Friday's season-opening 74-44 win over Utica. The senior scored 14 of her points in the first two periods, as Union jumped out to a 13-point halftime lead.

Field Hockey: Maddie Greco
Greco played a role in all four Union goals in the team's two Liberty League Tournament games last week, scoring once and assisting on three tallies. The junior helped on both goals in Friday's 2-1 semifinal victory over Ithaca, serving as the corner insert for the first goal of the game and then making a great cross-field pass to the back post for the eventual game-winning tally. She assisted on the team's first tally and then scored her team-leading 16th goal of the year as part of a fourth-period rally in Sunday's conference championship game at Vassar.

Women's Volleyball: Shannon McGrath
McGrath recorded 34 kills (3.4 kps) and 41 digs (4.1 dps) in a 3-0 week for Union, extending the team's winning streak to nine matches to end the regular season. The senior had two double-doubles and came one kill away from a third last week. She had a week-best 13 kills with 11 digs in a sweep of Clark on Thursday, then added 12 kills and 11 digs against Buffalo State before a nine-kill, 19-dig effort in a four-set win over Oswego State on Saturday.
