Men's Hockey Unloads Seven Goals on UMass Lowell

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Seven different Union College men's hockey players scored goals in the Garnet Chargers' 7-1 victory over University of Massachusetts Lowell Friday night at M&T Bank Center.

Senior Brandon Buhr led the way for Union (7-2-1, 2-2-0 ECAC Hockey), scoring a goal with two assists as the Garnet Chargers jumped all over UMass Lowell (5-6-0, 3-3-0 Hockey East) early. Sophomore Lucas Buzziol got the scoring started at the 1:58 mark of the first period, picking up a loose puck at his own blue and taking it himself for Union's first short-handed and unassisted goal of the season. Union's next two goals also came from special-teams play, beginning with Buhr's seventh of the season on a 5-on-3. He also assisted on first-year Alex Laurenza's 5-on-4 goal 28 seconds later. Laurenza's power-play tally marked the first-year's fourth straight game with a point, which is the longest active streak on the team.

Senior Parker Lindauer scored Union's fourth goal of the first period. The Madison, Wisc. native has 12 points on the season and his two points Friday helped him keep pace with Buhr as the two Garnet Chargers averaging more than a point-per-game this through the first 10 games this year.

Union only scored once in the second period as junior DJ Hart and Buhr set up senior Colby MacArthur for his third goal over the last two games. Hart registered his first point of the season, and Buhr reached three points in a game for the second consecutive contest.

Despite building on their lead, the Garnet Chargers were outshot for the first time this season as the River Hawks put 11 attempts on target to Union's 10. Sophomore goaltender Cameron Korpi stopped all 10 of the UMass Lowell shots he faced in the second period, bringing his total for the game at that point to 21.

On the other end of the ice, MacArthur's goal forced the hand of UMass Lowell's head coach Norm Bazin, and Samuel Richard took over in the River Hawks' crease for the rest of the game.

Richard made his first 13 saves until Union broke through again at the 8:57 mark of the third. Senior Nate Hanley scored on an assist from sophomore Will Felicio, and then sophomore Connor Smith added on to the Union lead one last time thanks to sophomore Carter Rose's fourth helper of the year.

Union successfully killed off all six of UMass Lowell's penalties and raised its penalty-kill percentage to 94.3%. Union entered the night with the third-best kill in all of NCAA Division I men's hockey.

However, UMass Lowell finally broke through during a penalty kill of its own and spoiled what would have been Korpi's third shutout of the season with 1:25 left in the third period.

First-year Brendan Holahan entered the game with less than a minute left, relieving Korpi who made a season-best 32 saves.

Union is now averaging 3.8 goals per game and scored 5+ goals in a game for the fifth time this season. It's the first time Union has posted five games with 5+ goals before December since the 2016-17 campaign.

The Garnet Chargers return home on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 5 p.m. to take on the Wildcats of University of New Hampshire.
