CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard erupted for three first-period goals, which proved to be the difference in the Union College Women's Hockey team's 4–2 loss to the Crimson on Friday night at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
Junior Emma Fulawka opened the scoring for Union in the second period on the power play with assists from classmate Maddie Leaney and first-year Megan Duplantie. Sophomore Jill Willis cut the deficit in half in the third period with assists from senior Stephanie Bourque and classmate, Klara Kenttälä.
Harvard opened the scoring just 48 seconds into the game, as Morgan McGathery buried a rebound off an initial shot from the point. The Crimson doubled their lead four minutes later when Zoe Boosmra capitalized on a Union turnover, and Megdanis capped the period's scoring with another rebound goal from the point.
Harvard added its fourth and final goal nine minutes into the second period, with Annie Sun finding Carla McSweeney in the slot. Following the tally, Union made a goaltending change as junior Monja Wagner was replaced by first-year Emma Rhéaume.
Fulawka put Union on the board four minutes later on the power play, finishing a textbook tic-tac-toe sequence. Duplantie slid the puck to Leaney below the right circle, who fed Fulawka on the left side of the crease for the tap-in. Union outshot Harvard 13–7 in the middle frame but could not cut further into the deficit.
Willis pulled Union within two nearly six minutes into the third period, cleaning up a rebound from Bourque's chance from the high slot. The Garnet Chargers pulled Rhéaume for the extra attacker with 1:30 remaining but could not net the two goals needed to force overtime.
Wagner stopped 17 shots, while Rhéaume made five in relief.
Union wraps up the first half of the season tomorrow afternoon at Dartmouth College. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
