HANOVER, N.H. - The Union College Women's Hockey team skated to a scoreless draw against Dartmouth College on Saturday afternoon at Thompson Arena to conclude the first half of the season.
The Garnet Chargers got off to a slow start as Dartmouth outshot Union 11–6, in the first frame.
Union built momentum in the second period and generated three quality scoring opportunities. Five minutes into the frame, senior
Stephanie Bourque ripped a shot from the top of the left circle that rang off the crossbar. Ten minutes later, junior
Maddie Leaney broke free on a breakaway, but Dartmouth goaltender Michaela Hesová denied the chance with a right-pad stop to keep the game scoreless. Immediately after Union successfully killed off a penalty with 1:45 remaining, Leaney set up sophomore
Emma Fulawka for another high-danger look, but Hesová stood tall once again. Both teams recorded six shots in the period.
Dartmouth outshot Union 14–5 in the third period, but junior goaltender
Monja Wagner stood tall to keep the game level and to eventually force overtime. Union produced several quality chances on a late power play in the third, including a near-connection from sophomore
Hayley Kelleher, who slid a pass from the far-left hashes toward first-year
Reanna Loberg before Hesová intercepted the attempt. Moments after the power play expired, first-year
Megan Duplantie nearly connected with Leaney at the top of the crease.
In overtime, both teams generated four shots, trading chances while pressing for the winner. Just 1:38 into overtime, Fulawka set up Bourque on a 2-on-1, point-blank chance, but Hesová once again turned the opportunity aside. Two minutes later, sophomore
Karianne Engelbert set up senior
Greta Kropp at the top of the crease. After Hesová kicked the rebound to the corner, Kropp recovered the puck and fed it back to Engelbert, who skated below the goal line and cut toward the crease for another attempt.
In the closing seconds of the extra frame, Dartmouth surged with multiple high-danger chances. The Big Green generated a point-blank 2-on-1 with 30 seconds remaining, but Wagner shut the door. Moments later, a Dartmouth attempt sailed just wide of the post. Wagner followed with a terrific glove save with 20 seconds left, and with 10 seconds remaining, she blocked away a shot from the top of the slot to send the game to a shootout.
The Garnet Chargers prevailed in a six-round shootout. Sophomore
Klara Kenttälä and first-year
Reanna Loberg tallied the opening shootout goals, and sophomore
Lauren Johnson buried the shootout winner. Wagner made three stops in the shootout to help secure the victory. The game is officially recorded as a tie, with both teams earning 1.5 conference points. Wagner finished the game with 35 saves.
