NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Union College Women's Hockey team fell by of a score of 6–3 to #15/14 Yale University on Friday night at Ingalls Rink, opening the second half of the season.
Junior
Maddie Leaney opened the scoring for the Garnet Chargers just under six minutes into the first period, assisted by sophomore
Karianne Engelbert and first-year
Megan Duplantie. Five minutes later, sophomore
Jill Willis extended Union's lead to 2–0 on the power play, with assists from sophomore
Hayley Kelleher and junior
Quinn Dunkle. Engelbert added Union's third goal late in the first period on the team's second power-play opportunity, with Leaney and Duplantie recording the assists.
Leaney opened Union's scoring by capitalizing on a rebound in the slot off Engelbert's wrap-around attempt at 5:45 of the first period.
Three and a half minutes later, Union earned its first power-play opportunity of the night, which Willis converted when a pass intended for first-year
Natalie Andelova deflected off a Yale defender's skate and into the net.
Engelbert capped the period with two and a half minutes remaining, planting a rebound home from the top of the crease following a sharp shot from Leaney.
In the second period, Yale's Cariana DiAntonio scored twice to cut the deficit to one by the end of the period. Her first goal came just 48 seconds in on a carryover power play from the first, tipping home a shot in the slot. Ten minutes later, DiAntonio struck again on a two-on-one opportunity.
Union and Yale began the third period skating four-on-four due to back-to-back penalties, but neither team converted.
Yale tied the game nearly halfway through the period when Naomi Boucher found Gracie Gilkyson in the slot, where she fired the puck into the net. The Bulldogs took the lead just 30 seconds later as Sophie Levering ripped a shot from the top of the slot through traffic into the back of the net.
Union had one final power-play opportunity late in the third period in search of the equalizer but came up empty.
Junior goaltender
Monja Wagner was pulled with 2:43 remaining in regulation for an extra attacker as Union pressed for the equalizer, but Yale's Hannah Weyerhaeuser capitalized with the Bulldogs' first empty-net goal just 18 seconds later. Cariana DiAntonio completed her hat trick with a second empty-netter 1:45 later, sealing a 6–3 win for Yale.
Wagner returned to the net for the final 51 seconds of regulation and finished the game with 38 saves.
Women's Hockey wraps up its weekend series at #15 Brown University on Saturday afternoon in Providence, Rhode Island. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m.
