Career Night for MacArthur Paces Union to 7-4 Win Over Princeton

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Colby MacArthur recorded a career-high three-point night for the Union College men's hockey team in a 7-4 win over Princeton University on Saturday night at Messa Rink.

In the win, Union (17-10-3, 10-6-2 ECACH) moves into a tie for third place in the ECAC Hockey standings with Colgate University. Tonight marks the 17th win of the season, the most in a single season under head coach Josh Hauge and the most for the program since the 2018-19 season. The Garnet Chargers still have four games remaining in the regular season.

Five different skaters registered a multi-point night in the win over the Tigers. MacArthur (2-1-3) and senior Josh Nixon (0-3-3) led the way with three points each. First-years Riley Brueck and Lucas Buzziol as well as sophomore DJ Hart all collected a goal and an assist each. Senior Caden Villegas picked up two assists on the night. First-year Ben Muthersbaugh and junior Brandon Buhr each scored a goal in the win.

Union went 2-for-3 on the powerplay and went 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Garnet Chargers made a statement early with a goal only 27 seconds into the contest. First-year Lucas Buzziol poked the puck loose after a battle in the corner and the puck skittered along the end wall to junior John Prokop. The blueliner dished the puck up to Brueck at the point and the first-year sent a one-timer past Arthur Smith for the score. The Tigers tied it up 2:43 later. Alex Konovalov intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and sent a shot from the right circle that hit the cross bar and went over junior Kyle Chauvette's glove. A goal from Muthersbaugh gave Union a one-goal lead for the remainder of the first period. The first-year fired a shot from the right circle for his 12th goal of the season.

A penalty with nine seconds remaining in the first period set up the Garnet Chargers to 1:51 of powerplay time in the middle frame. Nixon took a shot from the right circle that rebounded off of Smith's pads right onto MacArthur's stick in the left circle. The junior fired a wrister on the powerplay to give Union a 3-1 lead. Konovalov picked up his second goal of the night later in the frame. Initially ruled no-goal, a video review overturned the call on the ice, cutting Union's lead to one goal.

The Garnet Chargers and the Tigers combined for six goals in the final period. MacArthur scored his second power-play goal of the game at 8:22 of the third to put Union up by two. The Tigers responded 1:19 later with a goal from Brendan Gorman. The Garnet Chargers pushed the lead back to two 1:02 after Gorman's goal. Buzziol chipped the puck up to Brueck in the neutral zone. Brueck took the puck into the offensive zone and took a shot on goal. The puck deflected off of a Princeton defender's skate and onto the stick of Buzziol who buried it for the eventual game-winning mark.

Princeton scored on the powerplay with seven minutes to go in the third and Union was quick to respond with a goal from Hart. MacArthur flipped the puck out from a battle at the wall to Nixon and the senior dished the puck over to Hart. The blueliner sent a one-timer from the right circle. The Tigers pulled Smith with 2:19 to go in favor of the extra attacker and Buhr cashed in to ice the game.

Chauvette made 21 saves in his 16th win of the season. Smith stopped 22 shots in the loss.

Union leaves on the final road trip of the regular season next week. The Garnet Chargers play Harvard on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
