HANOVER, N.H. – The Union College men's hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Dartmouth College on Saturday evening at Thompson Arena.
The Garnet Chargers (18-11-3, 11-7-2 ECACH) are tied with Colgate for third in the ECAC Hockey standings with two games remaining.
Union and Dartmouth both went 0-for-3 on the powerplay. Union held Dartmouth to one shot on all three of the Big Green's power-play attempts.
Senior
Cullen Ferguson was the lone goal scorer for the Garnet Chargers. First-years
Riley Brueck and
Lucas Buzziol each registered an assist.
Following a 38-minute delay due to a medical emergency at Thompson Arena, both teams got off to a slow start in the first period. Dartmouth out-shot Union 8-3 in the opening frame, but the game remained scoreless after 20 minutes of play.
The Garnet Chargers came out strong in the second period and put three shots on goal during an early power-play opportunity. Still knotted at zero after the media timeout, the Big Green broke through at 12:54 with a goal from Eric Charpentier.
Dartmouth made it 2-0 less than two minutes into the third period. Luke Haymes sent a pass in front to Cam MacDonald who flipped it past junior
Kyle Chauvette for the eventual game-winning goal. Union made it a one-goal game at 3:50 of the third period. Ferguson sent a wrister from the top of the left circle to get past Emmett Croteau. A late penalty on Tim Busconi for hooking gave Union a power-play chance, prompting a timeout for the Garnet Chargers. Chauvette went to the bench for the extra attacker, but Union could not score the equalizer.
Chauvette made 22 saves in the loss. Croteau stopped 18 shots in the win.
Union returns to Messa Rink for the final weekend of the regular season. The Garnet Chargers play Cornell University on Friday night beginning at 7:00 p.m.
