SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team dropped a close 4-3 match to The College of New Jersey to open the spring portion of its 2024-25 schedule on Saturday afternoon at Sportime Schenectady.
Six Garnet Chargers earned one win each for Union (2-1), but the team could not pick up the elusive fourth point on the afternoon. TCNJ's Harrison Maitland-Carter was the only dual winner of the day.
Union started the afternoon strong, taking the bottom two doubles flights to earn the opening point. Seniors
Seth Prusko and
Austin Gregory won the first match of the day with a 6-2 victory over Aidan Twamley and Nathan Chan at the third flight, and sophomore
Solen Bellemare and first-year
Arhan Gupta clinched the doubles point by defeating the regionally ranked tandem of Alberto Thomas and Brett Schuster, 6-3, at the second flight.
After TCNJ knotted the score with a win at second singles, Senior
Ben Jacobs gave Union back the lead by finishing off a 6-2, 6-1 win over Twamley at fourth singles. Sophomore
Daniel Saxe put Union one point away from victory with his 6-4, 6-3 third-singles win over Schuster, but the Garnet Chargers came up just short at fifth and sixth singles to suffer their first loss of the season.
Union will return to action tomorrow against New York University beginning at 2 p.m. at Sportime.
