Comeback Falls Just Short for Men's Tennis Against NYU

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team put up a tough battle against New York University on Sunday afternoon, but a Garnet Charger comeback attempt came up just short in a 4-3 loss to the Violets in non-conference action at Sportime Schenectady.

NYU earned wins at the top-two doubles flights to pick up the first point of the day. Senior Seth Prusko and first-year Vivaan Gupta prevented a doubles sweep with a 6-4 comeback victory at the third flight over Alex Lee and Ryan Lyn, winning the final four games to emerge from a 4-2 hole.

The Violets earned wins at first and third singles to increase its advantage to 3-0, despite first-year David Wang putting up a good fight against ITA #29 Boren Zheng at the top flight before falling, 6-2, 7-5.

Sophomore Solen Bellemare got Union on the board and kept the team's hopes alive at the fifth flight, earning a pair of 6-3 sets to defeat Alexander Lee. First-year Jesus Sosa extended the match again with a win at second singles, grinding out a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Jingyuan Chen.

Senior Ian Schunk battled against Cooper Kline at sixth singles but came up just a few points short, with Kline escaping with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win to clinch the match for the visitors.

Senior Ben Jacobs ended the day on a positive note for the Garnet Chargers, coming back from a set down to defeat Ryan Shayani in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, at fourth singles.

The Garnet Chargers will return to action on Saturday with another non-conference matchup at the University of Rochester beginning at 2 p.m.
