ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team was swept by the University of Rochester in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon, falling by a 7-0 score at Goergen Athletic Center.
Rochester started the day by taking two of the three doubles matches to grab the opening point. Sophomore
Solen Bellemare and first-year
Arhan Gupta got the visitors off to a good start with a 6-3 win over Ahaan Malhotra and Josh Chu at the second flight, but the Yellow Jackets came back with 6-3 wins at the first and third flights.
The home team clinched the victory with wins at fourth, third and second singles. First-year
David Wang nearly got Union's first point at the top flight against regionally ranked Krish Vennam, battling back to take the second set by a 6-2 score before coming one break short in the third set. Bellemare also fought hard in his fifth-singles match with Andy Liu, taking the first set 6-4 and coming a break short in the second before dropping the supertiebreaker. In addition, sophomore
Shreyas Kode came up just short at sixth singles as well, dropping a pair of 6-4 sets to Surya Rajamani.
Union will take a few weeks away from competition before heading south for Spring Break beginning on March 23 with a match against Luther College.
