HAMILTON, N.Y. – Senior
Thomas Richter was the lone goal scorer in the shootout for the Union College men's hockey team in a 2-2 tie over Colgate University on Friday night at Class of 1965 Arena.
Junior
Kyle Chauvette was stellar in the shootout with four big saves.
Union (15-9-3, 8-5-2 ECACH) picks up their second shootout win in the last three games.
First-year
Ben Muthersbaugh and sophomore
DJ Hart both scored for Union.
The opening frame saw both teams go back and forth between the two teams. A penalty on Ben Raymond 57 seconds into the period gave Union their first powerplay. The Garnet Chargers sent two shots wide and Andrew Takacs made a save on a shot from junior
John Prokop. Union held a 13-5 edge in shots after the first period.
Both teams scored twice in the second period to knot the game at two apiece. Muthersbaugh opened the scoring with this 11
th goal of the season. The first-year picked up a loose puck from a turnover in the offensive end and sent a wrister from the top of the right circle to beat Takacs. The Raiders struck twice in the span of 48 seconds to take a 2-1 lead. Hart tied the game at two at 14:18. A shot on goal by first-year
Drew Sutton was chipped back out to Hart who scored from the top of the right circle.
A review after the end of the second period put the Garnet Chargers on a five-minute penalty kill to start the third period. The penalty kill blocked three shots in that time to keep the game tied at two.
Both teams generated chances in the third period, but sixty minutes was not enough as the game went to overtime.
The overtime period was quiet with only one shot on goal combined and two shots that went wide. Senior
Cullen Ferguson and junior
Nate Hanley both blocked shots early on into the overtime period to hold off the Raiders.
Chauvette made 25 saves, including 14 in the second period. Andrew Takacs stopped 26 shots.
Union closes out the road trip tomorrow at Cornell University. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Lynah Rink.
