Men's Tennis Starts Spring Break Against Luther

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Union College men's tennis team started its 2025 Spring Break trip with a 5-2 loss to Luther College on Sunday morning at the USTA National Campus.

Luther (6-3) swept the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day, and then emerged victorious in each of the top four singles flights to finish off the win.

Sophomore Solen Bellemare and first-year Arhan Gupta picked up wins for Union (2-4) at fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Bellemare defeated Eli Young by a 6-4, 7-5 score to earn the team's first point of the day and temporarily keep Union alive in the match. Gupta outlasted Gerardo Mainou in a third set supertiebreaker, posting a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory.

Several other singles matches could have gone the way of the Garnet Chargers as well, but Luther came away with the wins. Senior Ben Jacobs came up just short in a marathon supertiebreaker against Juan Herrara at third singles, falling 16-14 after the pair split a pair of 6-4 sets to start the day. First-year David Wang also dropped a first-set tiebreaker to Luke Westholder and then came one break short in the second set of their 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 first-singles matchup.

Union will be back in action tomorrow with a busy day of competition, taking on Freed-Hardeman University at 8:30 a.m. and then battling with ITA #34 Hamilton College at 1:30 p.m.
