Union's Season Ends in ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey team saw their season come to an end with a 7-2 loss to Dartmouth College in game two of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink.

The loss marks the final Union hockey game at Messa Rink.

Union finishes the 2024-25 campaign with a 19-14-3 record overall and a 12-8-2 record in ECAC Hockey.

The tandem of first-year Lucas Buzziol and senior Josh Nixon each scored for the Garnet Chargers for the second game in a row.

Union had some early chances with two separate breakaway opportunities, before they found the back of the net. Senior Cullen Ferguson forced a turnover in the defensive end and Buzziol went coast-to-coast to beat Emmett Croteau and put Union up 1-0. The Big Green tied it up 2:44 later with a goal from Luke Haymes, kicking off a run of four-straight Dartmouth goals.

The Big Green struck twice in the second period. John Fusco gave Dartmouth a one-goal lead and less than 90 seconds later, Haymes struck again on the powerplay. Union had several chances later in the period, including a sequence where junior Cal Mell had two shots, but Croteau made a save on one while the second was blocked by CJ Foley. Haymes was called for hooking at 19:09 of the period, sending Union to the locker room with 1:09 of power-play time to start the third period.

Dartmouth took a three-goal lead at 3:08 of the period. Union stopped the scoring run with a goal from Nixon at 4:56 of the period. Junior John Prokop forced a turnover in the neutral zone and dished the puck over to Nixon. The senior fired a shot from the high slot past two Dartmouth skaters to get past Croteau's right shoulder. The Big Green regained a three-goal lead and never looked back. After Braiden Dorfman went to the box for hooking, Union pulled junior Kyle Chauvette in favor of a 6-on-4 advantage. Dartmouth capitalized with a short-handed empty net goal. The Big Green added a power-play goal with less than a minute to play to ice the game.

Chauvette made double-digit saves in the second and third period on the way to a 30-save night. Croteau stopped 28 shots in the win for Dartmouth.

Today marks the final game for the class of 2025: Cullen Ferguson, Caden Villegas, Josh Nixon, Josh Phillips, Joe Sharib, and Thomas Richter.
