Baseball Starts Florida Trip With Walk-off Win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Union College baseball team opened their spring break trip with a rally in the bottom of the ninth against St. John's University (Minn.) to complete a 6-5 comeback at Lake Myrtle Main Field on Saturday afternoon.

Union is on a season-high four-game winning streak after the win over the Johnnies.

Sophomore Noah DiCaprio went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead Union offensively. Senior Kyle Zaslaw chipped in two hits in the win as well.

After a scoreless first inning, Zaslaw lined a leadoff double into center field. First-year Dylan Swarts followed it up with a walk. DiCaprio hit an RBI single to shortstop to bring Zaslaw home from second. Two batters later, junior Nico Lambros drove in Swarts from third with a groundout.

Union took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. DiCaprio hit a leadoff single through the right side and senior Dan Sheeran drew a walk. A sac bunt by Lambros moved both runners into scoring position. First-year Will Kelly hit a groundout to first, but picked up the RBI when DiCaprio crossed home.

The Johnnies struck back in the top of the fifth with two runs. A walk and a single put two runners on with one out. A two-run double to center field by Joe Becker put the Johnnies within one run.

Holding a one-run lead going into the eighth inning, an RBI single by Kelly gave the Garnet Chargers a two-run lead. St. John's responded in the top of the ninth to take their first lead of the game. Owen Best hit a three-run homerun into right field to give the Johnnies a 5-4 lead.

The Garnet Chargers opened the bottom of the ninth with a leadoff single from Caleb Miller who stole second during the next at-bat. After the next two batters struck out, Swarts lined a triple to deep center field and Miller scored the game-tying run. DiCaprio followed up with an RBI single through the right side for the walk-off win.

Senior Chris Suter tied his career-high of eight strikeouts in seven innings of work. Suter allowed two runs on seven hits. First-year Ryan Calvario earned his second win of the season with one strikeout in the top of the ninth.

The Garnet Chargers continue their spring break trip tomorrow with a non-conference tilt against The College of Wooster. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the Lake Myrtle Main Field.
