Baseball Falls to The College of Wooster

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Union College baseball team dropped a 12-6 non-conference game to The College of Wooster in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Main Field.

Junior Nico Lambros had a strong day at the plate for the Garnet Chargers. Lambros went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The Fighting Scots took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Back-to-back doubles gave Wooster a 2-0 lead. A fielding error put runners on the corners and an RBI single in the next at-bat saw a run score. Wooster added one more run in the inning to close out the first.

Wooster put the game out of reach with five runs in the third. With the bases loaded, an RBI single knocked in a run. Back-to-back singles later in the frame saw four more runs score.

Union struck twice in the third inning to get on the board. Sheeran singled and capitalized on a passed ball to move to second. Lambros hit an RBI double, allowing Sheeran to race home. Lambros moved to third on a passed ball before first-year Will Kelly knocked him home with an RBI single.

The Garnet Chargers scored four times in the fifth to make it a three-run game. First-year Dylan Swarts hit a leadoff single and advanced to second with a stolen base. Sheeran drew a walk and both runners moved over on a passed ball. An RBI single from Lambros saw Swarts score and Sheeran move to third. Lambros stole second and a walk by Kelly loaded the bases. Back-to-back errors saw three runs score for Union and make it a 9-6 game.

Wooster struck back with three runs in the top of the sixth. A solo homerun gave Wooster their tenth run of the game. A pair of singles later in the frame saw two more runs score to cap off the scoring.

Junior Jack Klein started for Union and is tagged with the loss. First-year Ryan Calvario pitched three scoreless innings to close out the game and only allowed one hit while striking out four.

The Garnet Chargers continue their spring break trip tomorrow with a non-conference game against #16/19 Wisconsin-La Crosse. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at Lake Myrtle Main Field.
