CLERMONT, Fla. - After dropping the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader at Hancock Park to No. 6 Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Union bounced back with a 7-3 victory over Oberlin, securing their second win over the Yeowomen in the Spring Games.
Game One: Wisconsin-Oshkosh 10, Union 0
After a scoreless first inning, #6 Wisconsin-Oshkosh wasted no time taking control, scoring five runs in the second inning, with three of those runs coming from singles. Following a quiet third inning, Oshkosh added four more runs in the fourth, capitalizing on walks, singles, and Union's defensive miscues.
Union managed to get a runner into scoring position in the fifth with a walk and a bunt that advanced the runner to second, but the Garnet Chargers were unable to break through.
Game Two: Union 7, Oberlin 3
First-year Carra Cleaves struck out five batters while allowing nine hits and three runs (two earned).
Senior Tatum Perkins and Cleaves led the way offensively for the Garnet Chargers. Cleaves went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs, while Perkins went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. Junior Elizabeth Werner contributed by going 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and first-year Amy FitzPatrick added an RBI, going 1-for-3 with a double.
After a scoreless first inning, Oberlin struck first in the second. With Maya Means on third base, Jess Friedman singled to the pitcher, bringing in the first run of the game. Later in the inning, with Friedman now on third, Leslie Sullivan singled to shortstop, driving in another run to give the Yeowomen a 2-0 lead.
Union responded in the bottom of the second, taking a 3-2 lead. Junior Riley Jahnle singled up the middle and later advanced to second on a passed ball. After first year Sammy Fenigstein walked and sophomore Sam Rose reached on a bunt single, the bases were loaded. Werner then drew a walk, bringing in Jahnle for Union's first run. Shortly after, Cleaves singled to left field, driving in Fenigstein and Rose to put Union in front.
The Garnet Chargers extended their lead in the third inning. FitzPatrick led off with a walk, followed by a double from senior Nahnny Sobetzko, allowing FitzPatrick to score and make it a 4-2 game.
Union added another run in the fourth. Perkins led off with a single up the middle and later advanced to second on a shortstop error. Werner followed with a single, moving Perkins to third. Perkins then came home to score on a fielder's choice, pushing Union's lead to 5-2.
Union's final two runs came in the bottom of the fifth. Rose led off with a walk and stole second base. Rose then advanced to third on a second baseman's error while Perkins reached first. Perkins then stole second. An error by the second baseman allowed both Perkins and Rose to score, extending the lead to 7-2.
Oberlin managed to score once more as Wren Norris singled down the left field line, allowing Sullivan who was positioned on second base to score to bring the game to a final score of 7-3.
Softball wraps up their games in Florida on Thursday with a doubleheader versus Wisconsin-Platteville and Luther. First pitch is set for 10:00 AM and 12:15 PM, respectively.
